I can't get this song out of my head. I have always liked the Shrek soundtrack version (John Cale/Rufus Wainwright), and there are other versions by various artists, but I think the original is the most powerful. Beautiful lyrics. I wonder why none of the other cover artists have used the last two verses. Apparently, there are more - Cale once said in an interview that Cohen had faxed him as many as 15 verses? I wish I could get my hands on them.
The video is a bit old-fashioned, so the young youtube reviewers feel compelled to bash it. Whatever :)

| To my friends who are getting annoyed with my political obsession - please don't unfriend me :) I'll get over it soon, I promise!
Just wanted to save this quote from Newsweek:
The contrast between his broad rhetoric and his narrow agenda is stark, and yet the media—preoccupied with the political "horse race"—have treated his invocation of "change" as a serious idea rather than a shallow campaign slogan. He seems to have hypnotized much of the media and the public with his eloquence and the symbolism of his life story. The result is a mass delusion that Obama is forthrightly engaging the nation's major problems when, so far, he isn't.

| | The hard drive on my laptop is dead. This is where I had an archive of all my digital photos since 2001. Yes, I do have copies elsewhere. Yes, I am still pissed off, royally. I liked how my photos were organized on that computer. And there were some files (not photos) that I don't have backups of. Not important enough to justify paying big $$$ for data recovery. A couple of movies that I downloaded but haven't watched yet. A tiny collection of mp3's. A handful of recipes. So... not what you would call a disaster really, but boy am I kicking myself! | Выяснилось, что менять тему уже поздно, т.к. проект уже не на первом этапе (они работали над ним в школе, так что я была не в курсе). Но т.к. тема была утверждена учительницей, я планирую с ней поговорить и выяснить, чем она думала что она посоветует насчет костюма. В крайнем случае, наденем просто пиджак с галстуком. Нужно будет провести обширную исследовательскую работу, написать биографию выбранного "замечательного человека", а потом сделать доклад в его образе (костюм, парик и т.д.). Понятно, что костюмом придется заниматься мне. Ребенок в качестве объекта своих исследований выбрал Мартина Л. Кинга, и я не совсем понимаю, как нарядить моего блондина таким образом, чтобы в нем можно было узнать чернокожего активиста. | В связи с моим назначением зав. кафедрой, незапланированным отъездом мамы в Россию и давно запланированным отъездом няни в отпуск, записали дочку в садик на август. И что вы думаете? Она ОБОЖАЕТ свою "школу". Никакого периода привыкания не понадобилось - как будто она весь год туда проходила. Воспитатели не могли поверить, что этот ребенок никогда не ходил в сад. В первый же день завела себе подружек. Я беспокоилась за ее английский - ерунда, никакого языкового барьера (то, что она все понимает по-английски, я знала, но оказалось, что она к тому же прекрасно говорит, гораздо лучше, чем я думала.) Утром, когда слышит, что пора в школу, все бросает и бежит за своим рюкзачком. В конце дня ее оттуда не вытащишь: "Мама, ну можно я еще немножко поиграю?" (Когда я прихожу, сразу переходит на русский, в отличие от сына, который каждый день после сада еще некоторое время находился в английском режиме.) В выходные спрашивает: "А почему мы сегодня в школу не идем?" В общем, ребенок, очевидно, "созрел" :)
UPDATE: Народ, с должностью не поздравления, а соболезнования надо! Зачем мне эта головная боль, тем более что у меня даже tenure еще нет? Не люблю я всю эту политику. Пришлось согласиться, потому что объективно, кроме меня, некому. | | comments: 17 comments or Leave a comment |
